Tensions Rise in Northern Europe: US Deploys Bombers to Norway

The US Air Force has deployed B-1B Lancer bombers to Norway’s Ørland Air Base, conducting high-risk training exercises with NATO allies, just weeks before Russia’s large-scale "Zapad-2025" military drills.

Kokcha News Agency – On August 9, 2025, three supersonic B-1B Lancer heavy bombers from the US Air Force landed at Norway’s Ørland Air Base, marking the start of a high-risk training exercise with NATO allies. The bombers, which took off from Dyess Air Force Base in Texas, were accompanied by Spanish EF/A-18M Hornets from Iceland’s Keflavík Air Base, supporting NATO’s Air Policing mission.

The exercises aim to enhance “find, fix, track, and target” capabilities in challenging and high-threat airspaces. The training focuses on improving real-time coordination, rapid response, and air superiority by testing pilots’ free maneuverability against simulated air and ground threats.

Captain Eric Alvarez, Commander of the Bomber Squadron, stated, “This mission provides an opportunity to train with our NATO allies in an integrated manner, ensuring readiness and cohesion.”

The deployment comes just weeks before Russia’s large-scale “Zapad-2025” military exercise, which is being interpreted as NATO’s “clear message” in response to growing tensions in the region.
