Heavy rains and catastrophic floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan have left hundreds dead and caused widespread destruction to infrastructure, according to reports.

“Kokcha News Agency” – On Friday, August 24, 2025, heavy rains and devastating floods in several districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, caused significant loss of life and property.

According to Pakistan’s Disaster Management Authority, the disaster has claimed 222 lives so far, with 210 fatalities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and 12 in Gilgit-Baltistan. The victims include 184 men, 14 women, and 12 children.

The sudden floods have severely damaged the region’s infrastructure. Roads, bridges, buildings, and power facilities have been heavily destroyed.

In Swat district, a major power station was completely destroyed, leading to widespread power outages in the area. Reports also indicate the destruction of 68 homes, 3 schools, and 16 other structures in the flood-affected regions.

The local government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has declared a day of mourning in honor of 5 helicopter crew members who lost their lives during rescue operations.

Rescue operations are ongoing, and emergency teams have so far saved thousands of people, including students and tourists trapped in flood-hit areas.

Ali Amin Gandapur, the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in a video message, directed local authorities to mobilize all resources to accelerate relief efforts. The local government has allocated a budget of 500 million rupees to assist the affected areas.

Pakistan’s Disaster Management Authority has warned that heavy rains will continue intermittently until August 21, and the risk of further damage remains high.

Pakistan, with a population of nearly 250 million, is one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. In 2022, monsoon floods submerged one-third of the country and claimed over 1,700 lives.
