EU’s Existential Crisis: Can It Awaken from Its Slumber?

“Kokcha News Agency” – The European Union (EU) has been grappling with its identity as a global actor, particularly in the face of crises such as the Ukraine-Russia war, the Syrian conflict, and the devastation in Gaza. Despite its ambitions to be a global power, the EU has increasingly distanced itself from this role in recent years.

While there have been exceptions, such as the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris Climate Agreement, and pressure on tech giants to respect personal data, the EU has largely failed to position itself as a dominant global force.

Professor Dr. Tarık Oğuzlu from Istanbul Aydın University explains that the EU has been living in a “post-modern paradise,” relying on the U.S. and NATO for security. However, with the rise of leaders like Donald Trump, who prioritize power over European values, and the growing threats from Russia and China, the EU is now facing an existential crisis.

Oğuzlu argues that the EU must wake up from its slumber and develop its own strategic identity, particularly in defense and security. He warns that if the EU fails to act, it risks being dominated by global powers like the U.S., Russia, and China.

Despite the challenges, Oğuzlu believes the EU is slowly realizing the need for unity and self-reliance. Recent developments, such as increased military spending and cooperation among member states, are positive signs. However, the rise of far-right political groups and internal divisions remain significant obstacles.
