Plane’s Right Engine Catches Fire During Takeoff: Near-Disaster Averted on Greek Island

A Condor B757-300 aircraft bound for Düsseldorf, Germany, narrowly avoided disaster after its right engine caught fire during takeoff from the Greek island of Corfu.

Kokcha News Agency – A dramatic incident unfolded at Corfu International Airport in Greece last night around 8:00 PM when the right engine of a Condor B757-300 aircraft burst into flames during takeoff. According to reports from *Naftemporiki*, the engine caught fire at an altitude of approximately 1,500 feet, prompting the pilots to shut it down.

The plane was flying over Corfu’s port at the time, and witnesses reported hearing a deafening noise. Initial information suggests that the aircraft performed a “go-around,” turning right to align parallel to the runway before heading northwest toward Brindisi Airport in Italy at altitudes between 6,000 and 8,000 feet.

The incident has raised concerns about aviation safety, particularly during takeoff and landing phases. Condor Airlines has yet to release an official statement regarding the cause of the engine fire or the condition of the passengers and crew.
