A World First: Robot Mothers to Give Birth to Human Babies

Scientists in China have announced the development of the first robot capable of carrying a baby in its womb for nine months and giving birth, marking a groundbreaking advancement in artificial womb technology.

Kokcha News Agency: In a groundbreaking development, Chinese scientists have unveiled the first robot designed to carry a human baby in its womb for nine months and deliver it. The project, led by Dr. Zhang Qifeng, founder of Guangzhou-based Kaiwa Technology, claims that artificial womb technology has now reached a “mature stage.”

Dr. Zhang explained, “We now need to place the technology inside the robot’s abdomen so that it can interact with a human and facilitate the pregnancy process.”

The artificial womb, located in the robot’s abdomen, will allow the baby to grow by receiving nutrients through a tube and developing in artificial amniotic fluid. After nine months, the robot is expected to give birth to a live baby. The prototype is anticipated to hit the market next year with a price tag of approximately 100,000 yuan (around £10,000). However, details on how the embryo will be implanted into the artificial womb and how fertilization will occur remain undisclosed.

Scientific Background and Controversies

Dr. Zhang noted that the idea is not entirely new, recalling previous experiments where scientists successfully kept premature lambs alive for weeks in a “biobag.” However, this new development has sparked significant ethical and legal debates. Zhang, who has been in discussions with Guangdong provincial authorities on policy and legal frameworks, argues that the technology could address China’s rising infertility rates, which increased from 11.9% in 2007 to 18% in 2020.

Criticism and Concerns

Critics, however, have labeled the technology as “problematic.” Some argue that the natural biological processes between mother and baby cannot be replicated by science. In 2022, researchers from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia warned that such technology could portray pregnancy as a “diseased process.”

On the other hand, some experts believe that artificial wombs could liberate women from the risks and physical burdens of pregnancy, offering a new level of freedom.
