Monsoon Rains and Landslides Kill Over 340 in Northern Pakistan

Kokcha News Agency: At least 344 people have died in northern Pakistan over the past two days due to heavy monsoon rains and landslides, officials confirmed on Saturday, August 16. The worst-hit area is Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 184 deaths have been reported, and dozens more remain missing or trapped under mud and debris.

According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), over 3,817 people have been affected in the province, with hundreds of homes, shops, and roads destroyed by floods and landslides. Provincial officials have declared a state of emergency in the most severely impacted districts, deploying nearly 2,000 rescue workers to search for survivors and provide aid to affected families.

The Meteorological Department has warned that scattered rainfall is expected to continue through next week, raising concerns about further flooding and casualties in already vulnerable regions.

Monsoon rains in Pakistan regularly cause significant devastation, and experts warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of such disasters. Last year’s floods killed more than 1,700 people and displaced millions.

Humanitarian agencies have called for urgent assistance, emphasizing that without swift relief efforts, the death toll could rise further, and long-term recovery will become increasingly difficult for affected communities.
