Violent Protests Erupt in Jakarta
Kokcha News Agency: According to the Indonesian portal Jakarta Globe, protests in Jakarta have escalated into riots, with demonstrators targeting a police station in the city center.
The unrest stems from public anger over the government’s decision to increase housing allowances and benefits for members of parliament, while many Indonesians continue to live in poverty.
The government has approved a monthly housing allowance of 50 million rupiah (approximately $3,000) for each parliament member, a move that critics say is completely disproportionate to the economic hardships faced by the majority of Indonesians. The protests have led to the arrest of 15 individuals, including students, as tensions continue to rise.
The demonstrations highlight the growing frustration among Indonesians over perceived government corruption and inequality, with many calling for greater accountability and fairer distribution of resources.
