U.S. Airline to Charge Overweight Passengers for Two Seats

Southwest Airlines, a major U.S. airline, has announced that passengers who cannot fit into a single seat will be required to purchase a second seat starting January 27. The company is also introducing assigned seating on the same date.

Kokcha News Agency: Southwest Airlines has implemented a new policy requiring passengers who cannot fit within the armrests of a single seat to purchase a second seat in advance, effective January 27. The airline is also transitioning to an assigned seating system on the same day.

Under the current policy, overweight passengers could either purchase an extra seat in advance and receive a refund or request it for free at the airport. However, the new rule will still allow for refunds but will no longer guarantee them.

In a statement, Southwest said, “We are informing passengers who previously benefited from the extra seat policy that they will need to purchase a second seat at the time of booking.”

The company clarified that refunds will only be issued if the flight is not fully booked, both tickets are purchased in the same class, and the request is made within 90 days after the flight.

Airport Requirement for Extra Seat:
According to the new regulation, passengers who do not purchase an extra seat in advance will be required to buy an additional ticket at the airport. If the flight is full, the passenger will be rebooked on another flight.

Criticism from Travel Experts:
Jason Vaughn, a travel consultant based in Orlando, stated that the change will negatively affect not only overweight passengers but all travelers. Vaughn said, “This decision will make the flight experience worse for everyone.”

Experts noted that Southwest has long distinguished itself from competitors with policies like free seat selection and complimentary baggage. However, they argue that this new step represents a departure from the company’s traditional values. Vaughn criticized the move, saying, “They no longer know who they are; they’ve lost touch with their customers.”

Financial Pressure on the Company:
Southwest Airlines has been facing financial difficulties recently.

Under pressure from investors, the company had previously announced plans to introduce new practices, such as charging extra for more legroom and adding late-night flights.
