Australia Suspends Most Shipments to the U.S. Due to New Tariffs

Kokcha News Agency: According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), Australia Post has decided to halt the majority of mail and parcel shipments to the United States in response to new customs rules targeting low-value packages.
In a statement, Australia Post clarified that only letters, documents, and gifts valued under $150 will be allowed for shipment, while all other items will be suspended “until further notice.” The decision, which took effect today, impacts most shipments to the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
The statement explained, “Due to the complex and rapidly changing nature of the situation, a temporary and partial suspension has become necessary to develop a sustainable solution for our customers.”
The new U.S. regulations, signed into effect by President Donald Trump on July 30, eliminate the customs duty exemption for export goods valued under $800 as of August 29. However, letters, documents, and gifts valued under $100 will remain exempt from customs duties.
This move follows a similar decision by India, which announced on August 23 that it would suspend postal shipments to the U.S. starting August 25 due to the new customs rules.
