Israel’s Gaza Attacks Trigger Resignations Across European Politics
Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza have led to a wave of resignations across Europe, as politicians protest their governments’ stance on the conflict and the humanitarian crisis in the region.
Kokcha News Agency: Since Israel launched its assault on Gaza on October 7, 2023, several European politicians have resigned in protest of their governments’ positions on the conflict. Resignations have been reported in countries including the Netherlands, Spain, the UK, Ireland, and Belgium, with officials citing their inability to remain silent in the face of what many describe as a “genocide” in Gaza.
In the Netherlands, Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp resigned on August 22 after his coalition partners blocked his calls for stricter measures against Israel, including sanctions on illegal settlements and a ban on arms purchases. His resignation triggered a domino effect, with several other ministers from the New Social Contract Party (NSC) also stepping down.
In the UK, Labour Party MP Imran Hussain resigned as Shadow Minister for the New Deal for Working People on November 8, citing party leader Keir Starmer’s refusal to call for a ceasefire. Other Labour MPs, including Jess Phillips and Yasmin Qureshi, also resigned in protest.
In Spain, tensions within the coalition government escalated after the Sumar alliance blocked a speech by Podemos leader Ione Belarra, who accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of planning a “genocide.” Five Podemos MPs resigned in response.
In Ireland, human rights lawyer Michael Farrell resigned from the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) after 14 years, stating he could no longer remain silent on Gaza.
In Belgium, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot warned that the coalition government could collapse if it fails to take a tougher stance on Israel’s actions in Gaza.
