Barak Raviv: Meeting Ends Without Results

Just five days before the European powers' deadline for Iran regarding its nuclear program, a meeting between representatives of Iran and European countries in Geneva ended without any progress, according to informed sources.

Lead: Kokcha News Agency: A crucial meeting between Iranian representatives and delegates from France, Germany, the UK, and the European Union concluded without any tangible results, raising the likelihood that European powers may activate the “snapback” mechanism to reimpose UN Security Council sanctions on Iran. The meeting, held in Geneva, took place amid mounting pressure from European powers, who have set a deadline of August 31 for Iran to comply with their demands.

According to the European ultimatum, Iran must agree to resume nuclear talks with the United States, allow UN inspectors access to nuclear facilities damaged in an Israeli attack, and provide information on its remaining stockpiles of 60% enriched uranium. If Iran fails to meet these demands by the deadline, European powers are expected to trigger the snapback mechanism, reinstating UN sanctions.

Behind the scenes, an informed source described the meeting as “not disastrous” but noted that it failed to yield any progress. The source stated, “The Iranians did not present any proposals for practical steps they are willing to take regarding their nuclear program.” Another source added that the Iranians “gave us little to work with” to avoid the reimposition of sanctions in the coming days.

European representatives who attended the meeting are expected to report back to their foreign ministers, who will decide in the coming days whether to activate the snapback mechanism.
