Kokcha News Agency – In a speech before the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted the dire situation in Haiti, stating that $908 million is needed to support 3.9 million people in 2025, but less than 10% of this amount has been secured. This makes Haiti’s humanitarian appeal one of the least funded in the world.
Guterres warned that over 1.7 million Haitians are at risk of receiving no aid, emphasizing, “This is not just a funding gap; it is a matter of life and death. I call on all donors to act before life-saving operations come to a halt.”
The Secretary-General described the Haitian people as being in the midst of “a storm of immense suffering,” with civilians facing horrific reports of rape and sexual violence. Hospitals and schools are repeatedly attacked, and the rule of law has collapsed.
Guterres noted that Haiti is one of the “most concerning” global hunger hotspots, stating, “Haiti is shamefully neglected and tragically underfunded.” He called for urgent protection for children, accountability for perpetrators of violence, and swift action by the UNSC.
Haiti, one of the poorest countries in the Americas, is on the brink of economic collapse due to gang violence and a power vacuum. The nation, with a population of over 11 million, has been struggling with political, economic, and security crises for years and now faces the threat of famine.
