Iran’s Foreign Minister Condemns Activation of “Snapback Mechanism” by European Countries

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has criticized the decision by three European countries to activate the "snapback mechanism," calling it "unethical, baseless, and illegal."

Kokcha News Agency – In a series of tweets on the social media platform X, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded to the activation of the “snapback mechanism” by three European countries, accusing them of acting as “representatives of Israel and the United States” in their efforts to pressure the Iranian people.

Araghchi described the move as “foolish,” stating that Iran has repeatedly warned against such actions, which he claims are “unethical, baseless, and illegal.” He called on the international community to rise up and say, “Enough is enough.”

The Foreign Minister also referred to the 12-day war and the activation of the snapback mechanism, arguing that the actions of the three European countries “effectively reward the aggressor and punish the victim.”

Araghchi warned that the decision would have “significant negative effects on diplomacy,” severely undermining ongoing talks between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). He also stated that Iran would be forced to respond proportionally to the move.

Araghchi further criticized the activation of the snapback mechanism, stating that it was done “without following legal procedures or having a legal basis.” He argued that this not only erodes trust in the decisions of the UN Security Council but also jeopardizes international peace and security. He reiterated his call for the Council and the world to rise up and say, “Enough is enough.”

On September 6, 2025, the leaders of three European countries (France, Germany, and the UK) sent a letter to the UN Security Council, initiating a 30-day process to activate the “snapback mechanism.” This mechanism allows the signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to reinstate previous UN sanctions against Iran if it is found to be in violation of its commitments.

The European countries expressed hope that this move would pressure the Iranian government to provide commitments regarding its nuclear program within 30 days, after which they would refrain from implementing the sanctions.

The UN process lasts 30 days, after which sanctions on Iran’s financial, banking, and defense sectors would be reinstated.

The activation of the snapback mechanism has sparked significant domestic and international reactions.
