Kokcha News Agency: In a statement marking the fourth anniversary of the U.S. military’s final flight out of Afghanistan, Republican Congressman Michael McCaul criticized the Biden administration for what he called a “disastrous” withdrawal that left behind at least 1,000 Americans and thousands of Afghan allies, exposing them to revenge killings by the Taliban.

McCaul, a prominent voice on foreign policy, stated that the U.S. allies were “left to face retaliatory killings,” and that the withdrawal “unleashed terrorism in the region.” He accused President Joe Biden’s administration of ignoring security preparations and failing to plan for potential contingencies, leading to chaos during the evacuation.

“Our allies were exposed to retaliatory killings, terrorism was unleashed in the region, and America’s weakness was broadcast worldwide—a weakness that emboldened our enemies like Putin to act,” McCaul said.

The U.S. politician described the withdrawal as a “catastrophe” and a “stain on our nation’s history,” but emphasized that the U.S. should not turn away from the lessons of the withdrawal. Instead, he called for accountability to ensure that such a failure never happens again.

The last U.S. troops left Afghanistan on August 30, 2021, marking the end of a 20-year military presence in the country. The withdrawal has been widely criticized by both Republicans and some Democrats, with former President Donald Trump repeatedly calling it a “disaster.”
