Deadly earthquake in eastern Afghanistan; The death toll has reached 800

Kokcha News Agency – According to Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban spokesperson, the majority of the casualties are from Kunar province. In Nangarhar, 12 people have died, and 255 are injured.

Laghman and Nuristan have reported 64 injuries, while in Panjshir, five houses were destroyed, but no casualties were reported.

Mujahid stated that the Taliban leadership has ordered all relevant institutions to immediately deploy to the affected areas and utilize all available resources for burying the deceased and treating the injured.

He added that the death toll may rise as some areas, particularly in Kunar, remain inaccessible, and reports from destroyed villages are still coming in.

Mujahid also called on international aid organizations to assist in addressing this major humanitarian crisis.

International Reactions:
– Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed deep sorrow over the disaster and offered full support to the victims.
– Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, extended condolences and solidarity with the Afghan people.
– The European Union expressed condolences and stated that humanitarian teams are on the ground to assist the affected.
– UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, called for global support for the victims and assured that the UN is mobilizing all available resources to aid the affected areas.
– Japan also announced readiness to support the victims of the earthquake.

Afghanistan has experienced a series of devastating earthquakes over the past five years, with significant loss of life and property. The most recent earthquake, which struck Kunar, Laghman, and Nangarhar provinces, has resulted in over 800 fatalities and thousands injured. This brings the total number of recorded earthquakes in Afghanistan since 2021 to 20.

2025 (So Far):

  • August 27: A 5.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.
  • August 19: A 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Hindu Kush region at a depth of 186 km.
  • April 16 & 19: Earthquakes of 5.6 and 5.8 magnitudes respectively shook the Hindu Kush region and the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

2024:

  • October 17: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region.
  • January 11: A 6.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Hindu Kush region.
  • January 5: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake hit the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.

2023:

  • November 15: A 5.3 magnitude earthquake shook the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
  • October: Several earthquakes hit Herat province, causing significant casualties.
  • August 6: A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border.
  • May 3 & August 5: Earthquakes of 5.6 and 5.7 magnitudes respectively occurred in the Hindu Kush region.
  • Late March: A 6.5 magnitude earthquake shook northern Afghanistan, killing at least 13 people.
  • January 5: A 5.8 magnitude earthquake hit the Hindu Kush region.

2022:

  • December 16: A 4.3 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan.
  • September 5 & 6: At least two earthquakes shook Afghanistan, one of which killed at least eight people.
  • June: A 6.0 magnitude earthquake hit Afghanistan, killing over 1,000 people.
  • February 5: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in the Hindu Kush region.
  • January 17: A 5.6 magnitude earthquake shook western Afghanistan at a depth of 30 km.

2021:

  • May 19: A 4.6 magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan at a depth of 17.6 km.
