Global Media Launches Joint Protest Against Israel’s Journalist Massacre

A worldwide protest is being organized against the targeting and killing of journalists in Gaza. The initiative, which includes nearly 200 media organizations, aims to draw attention to the journalists who have lost their lives in Israel’s attacks.

Kokcha News Agency – Led by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Avaaz, and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the protest will see participation from media outlets in 50 different countries.

As part of the protest, some newspapers will publish with black covers, television and radio channels will suspend their broadcasts, and digital media outlets will darken their homepages.

Gaza: The Deadliest Conflict Zone for Journalists
According to IFJ data, at least 210 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. This figure stands out as the highest recorded in any conflict in the modern era.

Due to Israel’s refusal to allow international media to operate freely in Gaza, the burden of reporting from the field has fallen on Palestinian journalists working under intense bombardment.

RSF’s General Director, Thibaut Bruttin, stated, “If journalists continue to be killed at this rate in Gaza, there will be no one left to inform the world. This is not just a war against Gaza but also against journalism.”

Double-Strike Tactics and Consecutive Deaths
The decision to protest follows heavy losses in recent weeks. In early August, Israel targeted five Al Jazeera employees in Gaza. Among those killed was Anas Al-Sharif, who had been providing daily coverage of the conflict to the Arab world.

Last week, the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis was hit by three consecutive attacks. Civilians and journalists who rushed to aid the wounded after the first explosion were killed in the second and third strikes. This method is known in military terminology as a “double tap.”

Footage obtained by CNN revealed that the second attack consisted of nearly simultaneous bombardments, which caused most of the casualties.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a “tragic mistake.”

“A World Without Journalists Means War Crimes Go Unpunished”
RSF’s statement emphasized that journalists are not only being killed but also targeted and discredited.

The statement read, “Without journalists, who will report on hunger, uncover war crimes, and tell the world about genocides?”

The international media protest aims to send a message that Israel’s military operations in Gaza are not only targeting civilians but also attempting to obliterate the right to information.
