European Countries Activate Sanctions Mechanism Against Iran at U.S., Israel’s Request
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, condemned the move, stating it lacks legal legitimacy and is part of a broader pressure campaign against Tehran.
Ismail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, criticized the decision by three European countries to activate the “snapback” mechanism under the JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. Baghaei stated that the move was orchestrated at the behest of the U.S. and Israel, and lacks legal standing. He emphasized that Iran has fully complied with its obligations under the JCPOA, while the other parties, particularly the U.S., have failed to uphold their commitments.
Baghaei also addressed the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, condemning the Israeli regime’s actions as a clear violation of international law. He highlighted the alarming death toll, with nearly 2,500 Palestinians killed while waiting in line for food, and criticized the UN for its inaction in stopping the genocide.
Regarding the U.S., Baghaei accused Washington of undermining diplomatic efforts, citing its withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 and its recent support for the European move to reimpose sanctions. He argued that the U.S. has consistently acted in bad faith, using pressure tactics instead of genuine diplomacy.
On the issue of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Baghaei stated that no inspections are currently taking place in Iran, and the country is in the process of deciding how to engage with the IAEA following recent developments.
