Kokcha News Agency – China has sent a naval ship to the South Pacific and Latin America, a move that comes amid rising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela. The mission, codenamed “Harmony 2025,” has been officially described as a medical and cultural cooperation initiative.
The Chinese Defense Ministry announced that the CNS Silk Road Ark, an ocean-going hospital ship, departed from the port of Quanzhou in Fujian province at the beginning of September. This marks the ship’s first overseas mission since it entered service in 2024.
220-Day Tour
According to Xinhua News Agency, the ship will embark on a 220-day voyage, visiting countries including Nauru, Fiji, Tonga, Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Papua New Guinea. It remains unclear whether the ship will pass through the Panama Canal.
The Chinese Navy stated that the mission aims to “enhance military medical exchange and international cooperation.” The ship, which has a 300-bed capacity, previously undertook a mission in the South China Sea.
U.S.-China Rivalry
China’s deployment coincides with the U.S. increasing its military presence in the Caribbean in response to the situation in Venezuela. The Pentagon has deployed warships and fighter jets to the region as part of its “narcoterrorism” operations.
This year, Washington and Beijing have also clashed over the sovereignty of the Panama Canal, and there have been allegations that China has established a suspicious “intelligence facility” in Cuba.
