Background Tensions
This incident comes amid rising tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan. On June 27, Russian security forces raided homes in Yekaterinburg where Azerbaijanis were residing, resulting in the deaths of two Azerbaijanis and several injuries.
The Russian Investigative Committee reported that six people were detained during the operation, accusing them of involvement in multiple murders. Those detained included both Russian and Azerbaijani citizens, and a court in Yekaterinburg ordered their detention until October 19.
