Ukraine War Sees Deadliest Escalation in Years: UN Rights Chief

The UN human rights chief, Volker Turk, has warned that the war in Ukraine has entered one of its deadliest phases since the conflict began in February 2022, with a significant escalation in missile and drone attacks across the country.

Kokcha News Agency – In a statement to the Human Rights Council in Geneva, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk highlighted the intensification of violence in Ukraine, particularly in recent weeks. Turk reported that July saw the highest monthly toll of civilian casualties since May 2022, as Russian forces ramped up missile and drone attacks across the country.

“Russia’s war in Ukraine has turned even more deadly,” Turk said. “Recent weeks have witnessed some of the most massive air strikes since the war began, with countrywide drone and missile saturation attacks resuming and intensifying.”

Violations of International Law
Turk condemned deliberate strikes on energy systems and other civilian infrastructure as “grave violations of international law.” He also raised concerns about the systematic torture and ill-treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war and arbitrarily detained civilians.

In occupied territories, Turk noted that Russian authorities are imposing their own laws, restricting movement, and suppressing freedom of expression. His office continues to document violations committed by both sides of the conflict.

Call for Immediate Action
Turk emphasized that negotiations to end the fighting must focus on immediate steps to protect civilians and safeguard the rights of people in occupied territories, as well as to end torture and ill-treatment.

“Lasting peace is only possible through full respect for international law,” Turk underscored.
