Appeal Court Upholds $83.3 Million Defamation Judgment Against Trump

Kokcha News Agency – The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York has upheld a lower court’s decision ordering former President Donald Trump to pay $83.3 million in damages to writer E. Jean Carroll for defamation.

The court, in its ruling, stated that Trump “failed to present any grounds that would warrant reconsideration of our prior decision on presidential immunity.” The court also found that the jury’s decision on the damages was fair and reasonable.

Background of the Case
The case stems from allegations made by E. Jean Carroll, an 81-year-old writer, who accused Trump of raping her in the spring of 1996 in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman store in New York. Trump denied the allegations and publicly attacked Carroll, leading her to sue him for defamation.

In May 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation, ordering him to pay $5 million in damages. Following this verdict, Carroll filed a second lawsuit seeking additional damages, and in January 2024, a jury ordered Trump to pay an additional $83.3 million.

Trump’s Appeal
Trump appealed the decision, arguing that the judgment was “excessive and invalid,” especially after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in July 2024 that presidents have broad immunity from federal criminal charges. However, the appeals court rejected Trump’s arguments, upholding the $83.3 million judgment.
