Afghan Couple Executed in Iran on Drug-Related Charges

TEHRAN (Kokcha.News) — According to the Iran Human Rights Organization, Yunus Mazarshams, 46, and his wife Hadiqa Abadi, both from Herat, Afghanistan, were executed in Qazvin Central Prison, Iran, on Thursday morning. The couple had been living in Iran for more than two decades and were working as caretakers in Taleghan, Karaj, before their arrest four years ago.

The report states that after their arrest, their three children were sent back to Afghanistan. The execution has not been officially confirmed or reported by Iranian state media or judicial authorities.

Executions for drug-related offenses in Iran have been on the rise in recent years. In 2024 alone, at least 503 people have been executed on such charges, marking a 6.6% increase compared to 2023 and nearly 20 times higher than the number of drug-related executions in 2020.
