TEHRAN (Kokcha.News) — The question of who will succeed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has become a central topic of speculation in Iranian politics. While Khamenei’s second son, Mojtaba Khamenei, is often mentioned, five other names have recently gained traction as potential successors: Alireza Arafi, Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, Ahmad Hosseini Khorasani, Mohammad Reza Modarresi Yazdi, and Hassan Ameli.
Alireza Arafi
Arafi, the Friday prayer leader of Qom and a member of the Guardian Council, has risen to prominence in recent years. Known for his hardline views and emphasis on Shiite theology, Arafi has advocated for closer ties with Russia and a more security-oriented approach to governance. He has warned against “separatism” and “sectarian division” in the Islamic world, calling for unity and cohesion.
Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri
Mirbagheri, a radical cleric and member of the Assembly of Experts, has gained attention for his apocalyptic worldview. He views the Islamic Republic as part of a “divine plan” and has dismissed the deaths of 42,000 Gazans as “worth it” for the sake of God’s greater purpose. Mirbagheri opposes Western development models and advocates for stricter cultural policies, particularly regarding women’s dress codes.
Ahmad Hosseini Khorasani
Khorasani, a low-profile but influential figure, is a member of the Guardian Council and the Assembly of Experts. He has been a staunch defender of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and has expressed deep mistrust of the West. Khorasani has called for self-reliance in Iran’s foreign policy and has urged officials to acknowledge and address internal shortcomings.
Mohammad Reza Modarresi Yazdi
Modarresi Yazdi, another member of the Guardian Council, is known for his anti-Western and anti-human rights rhetoric. He has criticized minority rights and has labeled protesters as “the fifth column of the enemy.” Modarresi Yazdi has also accused Western powers of using women’s rights as a tool to undermine Islamic societies.
Hassan Ameli
Ameli, the Friday prayer leader of Ardabil, has emerged as a key figure in Iran’s northwest. He has emphasized the divine nature of the Supreme Leader’s role and has called for strict adherence to Khamenei’s directives. Ameli has also sought to reduce tensions with neighboring countries, despite his controversial remarks about Azerbaijan and Turkey.
