India’s New Railway Over Bridge Sparks Outrage Over Sharp 90-Degree Turn
A newly constructed railway over bridge (ROB) in India, built at a cost of 200 million rupees (approximately $2.3 million), has become the center of national attention due to its nearly 90-degree sharp turn, raising serious safety concerns.
Reported by Kokcha News Agency:
The 648-meter-long railway over bridge, constructed in Madhya Pradesh, India, was intended to improve connectivity between Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar, and New Bhopal. However, instead of easing transportation, the bridge has sparked widespread criticism on social media over its dangerously sharp turn, which poses significant safety risks.
Investigation Launched
Following the circulation of images and videos of the bridge, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered an investigation into the faulty design. Seven engineers, including two chief engineers, were immediately suspended, and an administrative inquiry was initiated against a retired chief engineer.
Blacklisting of Firms
Both the construction agency and the consulting firm responsible for the project’s design have been blacklisted. The project’s chief engineer, VD Verma, defended the design, citing constraints of the available land and the proximity of a nearby metro station as reasons for the sharp turn.
Planned Improvements
Local authorities are now planning to acquire additional land to modify the bridge and create a safer turning radius.
