Australia’s Prime Minister Says UN’s Real Worth ‘Measured in Deeds’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasizes the importance of action over rhetoric at the UN General Assembly, calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and highlighting Australia’s climate leadership.

Kokcha News Agency: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, speaking at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, stressed that the true value of the United Nations lies in its actions, not just its longevity. “The true value of the United Nations is not counted in decades, it is measured in deeds,” Albanese said on Wednesday.

Reiterating calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and the return of hostages, Albanese cited the UN Charter’s mission to protect future generations from war and to advance human rights and social progress. He urged member states to uphold these principles, particularly in the context of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

“So we must ask ourselves: When can those words hold meaning, if not now? Where can those words apply, if they do not apply to the Middle East? And what can we, the members of the United Nations, say we stand for if we cannot say we stand for this?” Albanese said.

He also highlighted Australia’s leadership role in the Pacific and its commitment to climate action. Albanese noted that Australia is actively tackling climate change while capitalizing on the economic opportunities presented by renewable energy.

Calling for global unity, Albanese urged nations to trust in each other’s humanity, stating, “More than ever, we must choose to succeed together rather than risk failing alone.”
