South Korea Urges Global Community to Promote ‘Responsible’ AI Use
South Korean President Lee Jae Myung calls for international unity to ensure the responsible use of AI, emphasizing the UN Security Council’s role in addressing AI-related security and human rights concerns.
Kokcha News Agency: South Korean President Lee Jae Myung urged the international community on Wednesday to unite in promoting the “responsible use” of artificial intelligence (AI) and called on the UN Security Council to help structure a collective global response. Chairing an open debate at the Council on AI and international peace and security, Lee emphasized the need for governments, academia, industry, and civil society to work together toward “AI for all” and “inclusive and human-centric AI.”
Lee, the first South Korean president to lead such a meeting, highlighted the growing need for international cooperation to address concerns that AI and other modern technologies could be used in ways that harm security and human rights.
“To turn the changes of the AI era — where light and shadow coexist — into opportunities, it is essential for the international community to unite and uphold the principle of ‘responsible use of AI,’” Lee said.
While pledging that South Korea will play a greater role in addressing AI-related concerns, Lee stressed the Security Council’s responsibility to assess the evolving international security landscape and develop collective responses.
As the chair of the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, Lee announced that Seoul will adopt a global initiative to ensure that AI innovation contributes to humanity’s prosperity.
“Eighty years ago, the UN’s central concern at its founding was how the international community would manage the emerging threat of nuclear weapons,” Lee said. “Now it is time to explore new governance structures to address the new challenges and threats posed by AI.”
