Escalator Malfunction, Teleprompter Failure: Was Trump Sabotaged?
U.S. President Donald Trump faced technical issues at the United Nations, including a malfunctioning escalator and teleprompter, leading the White House to suspect sabotage.
Kokcha News Agency: U.S. President Donald Trump encountered a series of technical mishaps during his visit to the United Nations headquarters in New York, including a malfunctioning escalator and a non-working teleprompter. The White House is investigating whether these incidents were deliberate acts of sabotage.
The first incident occurred when Trump and First Lady Melania Trump boarded an escalator at the UN building, only for it to suddenly stop. The President and First Lady managed to climb the stairs without incident, but the malfunction raised eyebrows. The UN suggested that a cameraman in Trump’s entourage may have accidentally triggered the escalator’s safety mechanism, causing it to stop.
Later, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, Trump’s teleprompter failed to work. The President handled the situation with humor, quipping, “All I can say is, whoever is in charge of this teleprompter is in big trouble.” The audience responded with laughter.
Trump later referenced the incidents in his speech, criticizing the UN for its inefficiency. “The only thing I got from the United Nations was a stuck escalator in the middle. If the First Lady hadn’t been in good shape, she would have fallen. From the United Nations, I got two things: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he said.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt expressed suspicion about the incidents, stating on social media platform X, “If someone at the UN intentionally stopped the escalator while the President and First Lady were on it, they should be immediately removed and investigated.” Leavitt later confirmed that the Secret Service is looking into the matter, adding, “When you put it all together, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me.”
In response to the White House’s suspicions, the UN offered an alternative explanation. UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, suggested that a cameraman may have inadvertently triggered the escalator’s safety mechanism, which is designed to prevent accidents involving people or objects getting caught in the machinery.
