U.S. Delegation Arrives in Kabul, American Citizen Released by Taliban

As a U.S. delegation led by Adam Boehler, Donald Trump’s envoy for hostage affairs, arrived in Kabul, the Taliban announced the release of an American citizen, Amir Emiri, from prison. Sources indicate that the Taliban have prepared extensively for the visit, with expectations of "important" discussions.

Kokcha News Agency– A U.S. delegation, including Adam Boehler, Donald Trump’s envoy for hostage affairs, arrived in Kabul on Sunday, October 6. Simultaneously, the Taliban’s Foreign Ministry announced the release of an American citizen, Amir Emiri, from prison. Sources told Afghanistan International that the Taliban have taken extensive measures to host the delegation and that “important information” is expected to be discussed during the meetings, though details remain unclear.

This development comes amid ongoing negotiations between the U.S. and the Taliban. While President Trump has stated that American officials are discussing the return of U.S. forces to Bagram Air Base, the Taliban have denied any talks regarding Bagram.

The Taliban have expressed a desire to engage in economic and political discussions with Washington but have reiterated their refusal to allow the return of foreign troops to Afghanistan. However, Trump has hinted that he will have “more to say about Bagram in the future.”

The U.S. delegation also included Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s advisor on terrorism, and a Qatari official. Emiri’s release was facilitated through the mediation of the Qatari government.

The Taliban described Emiri’s release as a step toward removing obstacles in their relationship with Washington through diplomacy. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the Taliban’s move as significant but emphasized the need for the full release of all American citizens held in Afghan prisons.

CNN, citing its sources, reported that at least three other American citizens remain in Taliban custody. Additionally, the Taliban have expressed uncertainty about the fate of Mahmood Shah Habibi, an Afghan-American citizen.
