Israel Releases Nearly 2,000 Palestinian Prisoners in First Phase of Ceasefire Agreement

Kokcha News Agency– In a significant move under the first phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza, Israel has released nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, with 1,718 of them originating from the Gaza Strip. This marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

The release of these prisoners comes as part of a broader agreement between Israel and Hamas, which includes a temporary ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners. The Palestinian prisoners, many of whom have been detained for varying periods, were freed from Israeli prisons, including Ofer Prison.

The Palestinian Prisoners Media Office had previously published a list of 250 prisoners sentenced to “life imprisonment” who were set to be released under the ceasefire agreement, along with the 1,718 individuals detained by Israel since October 2023.

This development follows Hamas’ release of 20 Israeli prisoners to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) as part of the same agreement. The ceasefire, brokered with the involvement of Egypt and the United States, aims to reduce violence and create a pathway for further negotiations.
