Cutting U.S. Foreign Aid Could Lead to 14 Million Preventable Deaths by 2030, Study Warns

A study published in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet warns that the U.S. government’s decision to cut foreign aid could result in 14 million preventable deaths by 2030. The study highlights the critical role U.S. aid has played in saving lives, particularly in vulnerable populations.

A recent study published in The Lancet, one of the world’s most respected medical journals, has raised alarms about the consequences of the U.S. government’s decision to cut foreign aid. According to the study, the reduction in aid could lead to 14 million preventable deaths by 2030, reversing two decades of progress in global health.

U.S. Aid Saved 91 Million Lives
The study, conducted by international researchers, analyzed data from 133 countries and found that U.S. foreign aid prevented 91 million deaths between 2001 and 2021. The aid was particularly effective in reducing deaths from HIV/AIDS, with mortality rates in recipient countries 65% lower compared to non-recipient countries.

Musk’s Role in Cutting Aid
The decision to cut foreign aid came after Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, was appointed head of the Government Efficiency Department by President Donald Trump on January 20. Musk famously declared, “We put the Aid Agency through a wood chipper,” effectively ending the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID)’s role in providing 40% of global humanitarian aid funding.

Reversal of Two Decades of Progress
Davide Rasella, a researcher at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and co-author of the study, warned that the cuts could reverse 20 years of progress in health outcomes for vulnerable populations. The study projects that the reduction in aid could lead to 14 million preventable deaths by 2030, including 4.5 million children under the age of 5.

Global Ripple Effect
Following the U.S. decision to cut aid, other major donors such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have also reduced their contributions, exacerbating the global humanitarian crisis.
