Ukraine’s Anti-Corruption Agencies Uncover Massive Drone Procurement Scandal

Kokcha News Agency reports that Ukraine’s anti-corruption agencies, NABU (National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine) and SAPO (Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office), have exposed a major corruption scandal related to the procurement of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) and signal jamming systems for the military.

Key Details of the Scandal:

• Inflated Prices: Contracts were allegedly signed at grossly inflated prices, with some individuals receiving commissions of up to 30% of the contract value.
• Arrests: A member of parliament, two local officials, and several National Guard personnel have been detained on bribery charges. The identities of the four individuals have not been disclosed.

President Zelensky’s Response:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized the need for zero tolerance toward corruption in a Telegram post, stating:
“Corruption must be exposed through joint efforts and result in fair punishment.”

Background:

The announcement comes just two days after the independence of NABU and SAPO was restored following mass protests across Ukraine. Earlier, Zelensky had proposed placing these agencies under the control of the Prosecutor General, a move that sparked widespread public outrage.

Protests and Reversal:

The protests, coupled with pressure from the European Union, forced Zelensky to backtrack. On Thursday, Ukraine’s parliament passed a law restoring the independence of NABU and SAPO.
