Experts Warn: Drinking Coffee Like This Can Cause Weight Gain

Kokcha News Agency – A new social media trend, where protein powder is added to a shot of espresso and served with ice, is gaining popularity for its claimed benefits of boosting energy and supporting muscle growth. However, fitness expert Adam Clark has warned that this trend could lead to unintended weight gain and may be harmful if not consumed in line with an appropriate exercise program.
Clark explained, “Many people don’t realize that protein needs vary based on weight and activity levels. Consuming more protein than needed can lead to weight gain instead of weight loss.” According to UK health guidelines, adults are recommended to consume 0.75 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight. This translates to an average of 45 grams for women and 55 grams for men.
Some recipes shared on TikTok show up to 33 grams of protein being added to coffee, which experts say exceeds 70% of the daily recommended intake. Clark also pointed out that these drinks are often prepared with refined sugars, sweeteners, and processed additives, which could do more harm than good to health.
Nutrition experts emphasize that protein should ideally be sourced from whole foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, legumes, and vegetables. Clark stressed that protein powder should not replace meals, stating, “Eating a proper meal ensures you get vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats as well.”
The warnings come amid research highlighting the negative effects of synthetic additives on gut health. Colorectal surgeon Dr. James Kinross noted that protein powders contain emulsifiers and binding agents that can increase inflammation in the gut and potentially raise the risk of cancer.
Scientists have reported an 80% global increase in early-onset colorectal cancer cases in recent years. The rise has been linked to factors such as pollution, obesity, microplastics, and excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods.
Experts are urging consumers to avoid jumping on social media trends and instead maintain a balanced diet for their protein intake.
