Harvard Doctor Explains: What Happens to Your Face After 2 Weeks Without Sugar
A Harvard-trained gastroenterologist reveals the visible effects of cutting out sugar for just two weeks, including reduced puffiness, clearer skin, and improved gut health.
Kokcha News Agency – Cutting out sugar from your diet can have noticeable effects on your body in as little as two weeks, according to Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a Harvard-trained gastroenterologist. In a viral TikTok video that has garnered over 10,000 views, Dr. Sethi explained that eliminating sugar can lead to a more natural appearance, reduced puffiness around the eyes, and a decrease in belly fat due to reduced liver fat accumulation.
Dr. Sethi emphasized that removing sugar from your diet can strengthen the gut microbiome, improving digestion and nutrient absorption. He also noted that this change can lead to a reduction in acne and red spots on the skin.
His claims are supported by previous studies. A 2019 study conducted on over 8,000 students in China found that high-sugar beverages significantly increased the risk of acne. Other research has linked excessive sugar consumption to liver fat accumulation and inflammation.
Dr. Samantha Coogan, a lecturer at the University of Nevada, also highlighted the effects of quitting sugar. She explained that while sugar withdrawal can initially cause headaches, stomach pain, and digestive issues, the body eventually adapts, leading to sharper brain function, increased energy, and consistent weight loss.
According to Dr. Coogan, cutting out sugar not only aids in weight loss but also contributes to healthier hair, skin, and nails, better sleep quality, and a stronger immune system.
Experts stress that “free sugars,” found in chocolate, candy, sodas, and processed foods, are the most harmful to health. Natural sources of sugar, such as honey, syrups, nectar, and unsweetened fruit juices, are also included in this category.
Dr. Coogan warned, “Sugar can be addictive for some people. Therefore, the process of quitting should be approached similarly to drug or alcohol detox.”
Experts remind us that excessive sugar consumption is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain types of cancer, making it crucial to reduce sugar intake for both short-term and long-term health benefits.
