Shameful “Record”: 383 Humanitarian Workers Killed Last Year
The United Nations has reported that 383 humanitarian workers were killed in 2024, marking the highest number of such deaths recorded in a single year.
Kokcha News Agency – The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) has revealed that 383 humanitarian workers were killed in 2024, describing the figure as “shocking” and the highest ever recorded in a single year. The announcement was made in a statement marking World Humanitarian Day on August 19.
The UN emphasized that this alarming statistic serves as a stark warning about the need to protect all civilians in conflict and crisis zones and to end impunity for such attacks.
The statement highlighted that most of the humanitarian workers killed were local staff serving their communities. Many were attacked while on duty or in their homes. In addition to the deaths, 308 aid workers were injured, 125 were kidnapped, and 45 were detained last year.
Highest Deaths in Gaza
The UN report noted a 31% increase in the number of humanitarian worker deaths compared to 2023. Among the victims, 181 were killed in Gaza, while 60 lost their lives due to the brutal conflicts in Sudan.
Humanitarian workers have called for urgent action to address the escalating violence against aid personnel, stressing the need for greater protection and accountability.
