During a prayer ceremony before his birthday, the Dalai Lama expressed that he will be reborn after passing away, emphasizing that the next Dalai Lama must be identified and recognized according to traditional Tibetan Buddhist practices. He also stated that China should not interfere in this process, which is crucial for Tibetans politically, as they oppose China’s tight control over Tibet.
For Tibetans, the Dalai Lama is considered an incarnation of Chenrezig, the deity of compassion. His successor’s identification is of great importance both spiritually and politically, especially amid ongoing tensions with China.
Potential for Multiple Dalai Lamas:

The 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, fled Tibet for India in 1959 after the Chinese military suppressed a rebellion in Lhasa and has lived in Dharamshala ever since. According to Tibetan Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama can choose his rebirth, a practice that has occurred 14 times since 1587. The Dalai Lama has previously emphasized that his successor might be born outside China.
