Chancellor Merz Rules Out Sending Troops to Ukraine Until Ceasefire Is Achieved

Kokcha News Agency – In an interview with Sat1 television, German Chancellor Merz stated that many questions can only be answered after a ceasefire is established, and until then, no troops will be sent to Ukraine. He also emphasized ongoing discussions among Ukraine's allies regarding security guarantees post-ceasefire and peace agreement.

Kokcha News Agency – German Chancellor Merz, in a recent interview with Sat1 television, clarified that Germany will not send troops to Ukraine until a ceasefire is in place. He explained that many critical questions regarding the conflict can only be addressed after a ceasefire is achieved. Merz also highlighted that discussions among Ukraine’s allies about potential security guarantees following a ceasefire and peace agreement are still ongoing.

Merz pointed out that Berlin has certain reservations and stressed that the final decision must be made by the German Parliament. He noted, “We will need to examine the agreement made with Russia at that time. This cannot be done against Russia but must be done with Russia. Therefore, there are likely many obstacles that need to be overcome over a considerable period.”

When asked about the possibility of a peace summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Merz expressed skepticism. He stated that Putin is currently in a position of strength and is not under sufficient pressure to engage in negotiations. Merz commented, “He sees how the U.S. President (Donald Trump) deals with him. He sees how other world leaders, for example, at the Shanghai summit, deal with him.”

The German Chancellor also argued that Western countries could increase pressure on Moscow by implementing stronger economic sanctions but noted that this would only be successful with the active support of the U.S. administration.
