Couple Expects First Baby After 18 Years, Thanks to AI-Powered “STAR” Method

After 18 years of struggling to conceive, a couple in the US is expecting their first baby in December, thanks to an AI-powered fertility treatment called the “STAR” method.

According to CNN International, the couple had undergone multiple rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) without success due to the husband’s rare condition, azoospermia, which results in the absence of measurable sperm in semen. Normally, semen contains hundreds of millions of sperm, but in cases of azoospermia, even microscopic examination fails to detect any sperm.

The STAR Method:
The couple sought help from Columbia University Fertility Center, where the STAR (Sperm Tracking and Retrieval) method, powered by artificial intelligence, was used to identify “hidden” sperm in men previously thought to have none.

The Breakthrough:
The husband provided a semen sample, which was analyzed using the AI-powered system. The team discovered three hidden sperm cells, which were then used in IVF treatment. The wife became the first woman to conceive using the STAR method, with their baby due in December.

Mother’s Reaction:
The mother-to-be expressed her disbelief and joy, saying, “It took me two days to believe I was actually pregnant… I still wake up in the morning and can’t believe it’s real. I didn’t believe I was pregnant until I saw the test results.”

Potential of AI in Fertility:
While more research and testing are needed, CNN notes that AI could represent a significant advancement in addressing male infertility.
