Melania Trump’s Strict Food Rules During Official Visits: No Raw Fish
Former First Lady Melania Trump is known for her strict dietary preferences, which even influence official menus during diplomatic events. Her famously cautious approach to food choices, including avoidance of raw fish, highlights her particular standards.

Kokcha News Agency reports that Melania Trump, the wife of former U.S. President Donald Trump, maintained very strict rules regarding what she eats during official visits. According to her 2024 memoir titled *”Melania,”* she once gave clear instructions to Japanese chefs at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo: she would not eat raw fish, a common delicacy in Japan.
Despite her refusal to consume raw fish, Melania expressed her effort to try local cuisines as much as possible, praising the “delicious flavors and textures” during the dinner with the Japanese Imperial Family. Her choice to avoid raw seafood aligns with common food safety concerns, especially in contexts involving unfamiliar or high-risk foods.
Notably, her cautious attitude prevented a famous past incident involving a U.S. President. In 1992, George H. W. Bush had fallen ill during a visit to Tokyo after vomiting into Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa’s lap—an episode widely attributed to acute gastroenteritis caused by a bacterial or viral infection, not food poisoning.
**Why Does Melania Trump Avoid Raw Fish?**
Her memoir does not explicitly specify why she abstains from raw fish, but experts suggest food safety considerations likely play a role. Raw fish and other undercooked products carry risks of foodborne illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as seniors or immunocompromised individuals. Although many healthy people consume raw fish without issues, contaminated or improperly prepared seafood can cause symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting.
Many people appreciate raw fish for its texture and flavor, but for others, it is unappetizing or intimidating. Whether Melania falls into the cautious group or not remains unknown, but her preferences reflect a broader trend among high-profile figures prioritizing health and safety standards in official settings.
