Italy Qualifies for Maiden T20 World Cup After Dramatic European Qualification
Italy made history by securing their first-ever qualification for the T20 World Cup, sneaking through the European qualifiers on Friday despite a narrow loss to the Netherlands, marking an unprecedented achievement for the cricket minnows.

Kokcha News Agency reports that Italy’s cricket team has achieved a historic milestone by qualifying for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup for the first time ever.
Their qualification came despite a narrow loss in the final European qualifier match against the Netherlands. The result suited both teams, with Italy needing only to avoid a heavy defeat to secure their spot, thanks to a superior net run rate.
In a modest chase of 135 runs, Italy watched as the Netherlands comfortably reached the target in 16.2 overs, allowing both teams to advance to the global tournament to be hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
This marks Italy’s first appearance in the T20 World Cup, signifying a major development in European cricket.
Meanwhile, Scotland, a long-standing participant with six previous T20 World Cup appearances, surprisingly failed to qualify after losing a dramatic match to Jersey, who chased down 134 in the final ball. Interestingly, Scotland was also hoping for Italy to win, indicating how tight and competitive the qualifiers were.
The 2026 tournament will feature 20 teams, with two hosts (India and Sri Lanka), and five more qualification spots remaining from Africa and the East Asia-Pacific regions. Italy’s qualification adds a new dimension to the tournament’s growing diversity and global reach.
