ChatGPT Introduces ‘Conversation Branching’ Feature for Enhanced Creativity
OpenAI has rolled out the highly anticipated "conversation branching" feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to explore different scenarios and ideas within a single chat without disrupting the original conversation.

Kokcha News Agency – OpenAI has launched the “conversation branching” feature for ChatGPT, a long-requested tool that enables users to create alternative scenarios and explore different ideas within a single chat. This new feature aims to enhance creativity and streamline workflows for users.
Enhanced User Experience
With the new feature, users can now select the “branch in new chat” option from the “more options” menu during a conversation. This action copies the current chat and opens a new chat window, allowing users to experiment with alternative ideas while preserving the original conversation.
Previously, users had to either disrupt the ongoing chat or start a completely new conversation, which often interrupted workflows and limited creativity. The new system enables users to test “what if” scenarios without losing context, making it easier to explore multiple avenues of thought.
Inspired by Software Development
Experts have noted that the branching feature is similar to the “Git branch” system used in software development. Just as developers can experiment with code changes in separate branches without affecting the main version, ChatGPT users can now test alternative responses and ideas in parallel conversations.
Research has shown that linear conversations with large language models can lead to inefficiencies in project planning and information gathering. ChatGPT’s new branching feature aims to overcome these limitations by allowing users to explore multiple paths simultaneously.
Competitors Have Taken Similar Steps
Anthropic’s Claude has had a branching feature for over a year, but OpenAI’s implementation is expected to have a broader impact due to ChatGPT’s massive user base. The feature reinforces the idea that AI is a “tool” rather than an “authority,” encouraging users to test different perspectives, validate hypotheses, or challenge assumptions.
Other Upcoming Features
In addition to conversation branching, OpenAI plans to introduce parental controls next month. This move comes in response to a lawsuit filed by the family of a teenager who committed suicide after months of conversations with ChatGPT. The new feature aims to provide greater oversight and safety for younger users.
