Maldives President Stands Firm Against Israel, Bans Israeli Passport Holders
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed his country’s unwavering stance against Israel, banning Israeli passport holders and condemning Israel’s attacks on humanitarian aid ships as a "violation of international law."
In a written response to Anadolu Agency, President Muizzu emphasized that “real sovereignty is not measured by a country’s size or military power, but by its commitment to conscience, even under pressure.” He criticized the global community’s inaction in the face of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, stating that international law must be applied equally to all nations.
Muizzu, who banned Israeli passport holders in April, called for political pressure, sanctions, and restrictions to hold Israel accountable for its crimes. He highlighted that small nations, unbound by the interests of major powers, can speak with moral clarity.
The Maldives has a long tradition of solidarity with Palestine, participating in the International Court of Justice case against Israel and advocating for an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. Muizzu vowed to continue supporting Palestine’s full membership in the UN and ensuring the Palestinian cause is not forgotten in international forums.
Muizzu warned that trading justice for profit equates to standing with oppression, and true sovereignty lies in staying loyal to one’s conscience. He stressed that even the smallest nations can inspire global change by choosing justice.
