WHO Calls for Higher Taxes on Tobacco, Sugary Drinks, and Alcohol to Combat Chronic Diseases

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urged governments worldwide to significantly increase taxes on tobacco, alcoholic beverages, and sugar-sweetened drinks to reduce the prevalence of chronic diseases.

The WHO has called for a substantial price hike on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks as part of a strategy to curb the rising cases of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. The organization recommends that the prices of these products be increased by at least 50% over the next decade.

According to the WHO, this price increase could prevent up to 50 million premature deaths over the next 50 years. The consumption of these products is a major contributor to the global burden of chronic diseases, which are among the leading causes of death worldwide.

The WHO’s call for higher taxes is part of a broader effort to reduce the consumption of harmful substances and promote healthier lifestyles. The organization emphasizes that taxing these products is an effective way to discourage their use and generate revenue that can be invested in public health initiatives.
