Astronomers Discover Newborn Supermassive Black Hole in Mysterious “Infinity Galaxy”
Astronomers from Yale University have discovered a newborn supermassive black hole at the center of a unique "Infinity Galaxy," shaped like the infinity symbol, shedding light on the formation of massive black holes in the early universe.

Kokcha News Agency: A team of astronomers led by Pieter van Dokkum from Yale University has identified an unusual structure in the depths of the universe: a galaxy shaped like the infinity symbol, with a newborn supermassive black hole at its center.
The “Infinity Galaxy” is actually the result of a recent collision between two disk galaxies. The collision created a structure resembling the infinity symbol, but what makes this galaxy truly remarkable is not just its shape.
Researchers observed a supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy, devouring vast amounts of matter within dense gas clouds. The black hole’s location, precisely at the center of the system rather than within either of the original galactic cores, has left scientists astounded.
“This could be the first direct observation of a newborn supermassive black hole,” said van Dokkum. “The evidence we have is compelling.”
Joint Observations from Webb, Keck, and Chandra
The discovery was made using images from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope as part of the COSMOS-Web survey. Additional data from the W. M. Keck Observatory, Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory were also used.
The black hole is estimated to have a mass of about 1 million Suns, equivalent to 300 billion times the mass of Earth.
Shedding Light on Early Universe Black Hole Mystery
This observation contributes significantly to the ongoing debate about how such massive black holes formed in the early universe. Two main theories exist:
- “Light Seeds” Theory: Suggests that small black holes formed from collapsing stars and gradually merged to become supermassive. However, this process would require an extremely long time.
- “Heavy Seeds” Theory: Proposes that massive gas clouds collapsed directly into giant black holes. This theory, supported by Yale astrophysicist Priyamvada Natarajan, is rare because such gas clouds typically form stars instead of black holes.
Van Dokkum explained that the Infinity Galaxy provides a rare example of how extreme gas density conditions could lead directly to black hole formation.
“Here, two disk galaxies collided, creating stellar rings. During the collision, the gas was compressed so violently that it may have triggered black hole formation,” he said.
Further Research Needed
The research team emphasizes that more observations are needed to confirm whether this extraordinary black hole is indeed a newborn supermassive black hole.
However, the initial findings offer crucial insights into how black holes could have grown so rapidly in the early universe. The Infinity Galaxy may prove to be a turning point in unraveling this cosmic mystery.
