“Ghost Particle” Hits Earth, Breaks Energy Record
Scientists have detected a cosmic neutrino with energy 22 times greater than the previous record, captured by a detector 3.5 kilometers deep in the Mediterranean Sea.

Kokcha News Agency – On February 13, 2023, a detector operating 3.5 kilometers deep in the Mediterranean Sea detected a cosmic neutrino with energy 22 times greater than the previous record.
Neutrinos, often referred to as “ghost particles,” are among the most abundant fundamental particles in the universe. They have no electric charge, almost no mass, and rarely interact with matter. However, on rare occasions, they collide with other particles, producing faint flashes of light. KM3NeT is a specialized detector capable of capturing these flashes in the deep-sea darkness.
Researchers confirmed that the event, coded “KM3-230213A,” was not a data error but the result of a high-energy neutrino interacting near the detector, creating a muon.
While the probability of detecting such a neutrino is around 1%, it does not contradict the fact that other massive detectors like IceCube and Pierre Auger have failed to capture such a signal in over a decade.
Source Still Unknown
The source of these neutrinos remains a mystery. Possible origins include extreme energy regions at the centers of galaxies, gamma-ray bursts from supernovae, or “cosmogenic neutrinos” produced by cosmic rays colliding with the cosmic microwave background from 13.8 billion years ago. However, scientists believe it is highly unlikely that the particle originated from the Milky Way.
